How Can You Change The Color Of Your Mat Board Using Acrylic Paint?

Following only four easy steps, you can change the color of your mat board using acrylic paint in no time. Without wasting any more time, let’s walk you through the steps.

  • Step 1: Remove your mat board from the frame or the artwork it’s attached with. Or take a mat board that you want to use as a canvas.
  • Step 2: Take a paintbrush. Mix your undercoat, preferably a water-based undercoat, and dips the paintbrush onto the paint. Apply a thin layer of that paint, using it as a primer. Wait for two hours so that the paint can dry out. If the color of the mat board is too dark, go for a second layer of primer.
  • Step 3: Now, mix your acrylic paint with adequate water. Water-based acrylic paints are called acrylic craft paints. Now take a synthetic brush. Spread the color evenly and cover the entire mat board. Again, wait for the paint to dry but wait for several hours this time.
  • Step 4: Again, apply the acrylic paint you prepared before. Now, wait again for several hours.
  • Additional Step: Use decoupage gloss for a glazy and shiny outlook.

Use a brush with soft bristles and make sure the brush you use for sealing isn’t used for any other purpose. Now apply a thin layer to your painting but don’t stop halfway. You have to start from one side and stop at the end of that side, doing a straight line. Or else your painting may peel out.
  • Step 3: Wait for three hours.
  • Step 4: Do a second coat, but go in the opposite direction of the straight line you coated before..
  • Step 5: Wait again for three hours.

You can add a third coating, but it’s not necessary.

How Long Does It Take For Acrylic Paint To Dry On The Matboard?

Usually, acrylic paint dries faster than any other paint, and it doesn’t take more than twenty to thirty minutes to dry. However, it depends as different surfaces take different times.

It takes around 24 hours for acrylic paint to dry on the mat board. If the core is made of wood pulp, it will take 6 to 12 hours. But if you put on many layers, it may take more time than that.

If the core is made of cotton rag, it will take 24 hours. If you paint in a warm and torrid environment, the span of drying time will lessen. But try not to speed up the process and let it happen naturally.

Is Acrylic Paint Waterproof Over Mat Board?

Acrylic paint indeed dries faster, but it doesn’t mean it is waterproof. People often think that acrylic paint is waterproof as it dries faster. But the truth is it isn’t. Acrylic paint is water-resistant, but it isn’t waterproof over any surfaces.

Add a sealer to make your acrylic paint waterproof over the mat board. As acrylic paint is water-based, you are bound to add a sealer because acrylic paint will absorb water, and the stain will automatically peel off on its own.

Over mat board, use either UV protection spray or a surface primer to make your acrylic paint waterproof.
